Why Label Fresh Produce?

A label on a piece of fruit does more work than most people realize. It speeds up checkout by making loose produce scan-ready. It sharpens inventory accuracy so your team always knows what actually moved. It closes the door on register fraud from mislabeled or swapped produce. And increasingly, it's the first link in the farm-to-shelf traceability chain your retail partners expect you to have in place before they'll even talk terms.

Built to Stick

Pro Label has supplied PLU and GS1 produce labels to packing houses and growers across the USA, Canada, and Mexico since 1994. Our labels are manufactured from a proprietary, FDA/EU compliant material engineered specifically to integrate with our labeling equipment — flexible enough to conform to the wide variety of produce shapes and surfaces, with special adhesive formulations available for difficult-to-label products (wet, waxed, or uneven surfaces).

We handle every phase of label production: using your existing artwork, designing something new, or helping assign PLU and GTIN/GS1 codes. And because we have no annual minimum purchase requirements, you order only what you need — if your crop mix or volume changes mid-season, your label order adjusts with it.

Compliance & Materials

  • ✓ Pressure-Sensitive

Every Pro Label product is pressure-sensitive — no heat, no solvents, just a clean bond with light pressure. That simplicity is part of what keeps our machines dependable.

    • See how pressure-sensitive labels are built

Pressure-sensitive labels are built from two parts: a facestock (the visible, printed layer) and a liner (the backing it peels away from). We offer both film and paper facestock options. For high-speed, narrow-web applications, we use a durable PET liner — it holds up at speed without breaking, and it's recyclable.

  • ✓ Safe for Direct Food Contact

Every label is documented safe to touch your produce directly — not just "food-safe" as a marketing phrase. Full compliance documentation is available as a downloadable PDF.

    • See the compliance details

Our label stocks conform to FDA Code of Federal Regulations 21 — sections 176.170, 176.180, 175.105, 175.125, and 175.300 — as well as EEC, BGA, and CFIA food-contact guidelines. For produce, direct food contact is the claim that actually matters — it's a stricter standard than the adhesives used on outer packaging or containers, which never touch the product itself.

  • ✓ Built to Actually Stick

Most of our labels use flexible Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film — chosen because it has reduced "memory" in every direction, so it conforms cleanly to curves, ridges, and irregular surfaces instead of curling or lifting. We also offer a paper facestock for select challenging applications.

    • See liner & finish options

Our standard liner is a durable, recyclable PET film. Glassine and kraft paper liner options are also available for semi-automatic applicators. Topcoats — including waterproof varnishes and printable coatings — are available too, though these are more common on larger prime labels than on small produce stickers.

  • ✓ Recyclable & Environmentally Responsible Options

Our standard PET liner is recyclable, and we offer an Environmentally Responsibly Produced paper facestock used today by our organic grower customers. In the interest of a straight answer: most of our facestocks are not compostable or recyclable. If sustainable materials matter for your program, ask us — we'll tell you exactly what's available now versus what's still in development.

PLU Stickers

  • ✓ Plu and GS1 Labels Are Their Own Category

PLU and GS1 labels are their own category — built specifically for checkout speed and inventory accuracy, not just a smaller version of our other produce labels.

    • See available PLU sizes

Available in all standard GS1 sizes, from small pickpoint labels up to larger oval and rectangular formats. Need something different? We can build a custom die for a new PLU shape.

Sizes & Shapes

  • ✓ We Can Produce Any Label Shape You Need

Unique shapes require a one-time tooling charge for a custom die — but within our standard GS1 sizes, there's no special die charge at all.

We process and pack rutabagas—a difficult product for direct application of GS1 labels. Our product is often wet, waxed, and has uneven surfaces. Pro Label machines have delivered reliable performance over the years, and the labels are formulated for excellent adhesion, even on our produce.
