Are you ready for Sunrise 2027?

New requirements are reshaping how perishable and industrial products need to be tracked. FSMA 204 sets a food traceability compliance deadline of July 20, 2028, and the industry-wide Sunrise 2027 initiative is driving a shift toward 2D barcodes and richer item-level data.


Retailers including Walmart and Kroger are also pushing their own RFID and traceability requirements down the supply chain — the smart move is getting ahead of that, not reacting to it.

    Walmart has committed to cutting its global operational food waste in half by 2030 and is rolling out RFID-enabled visibility in fresh food departments as one of its key tools to get there. Kroger is pursuing a parallel traceability strategy built on GS1 2D barcodes, tracking lot codes, pack dates, and expiration dates at the item level. Item-level serialization also changes how recalls work: without it, a contamination event affecting only a few lots can force an entire product category off shelves nationwide, since retailers can't tell which lots are actually affected. With item-level RFID or serialized barcoding, only the specific affected lots need to come down.
